Mauna Kea Golf Course, is a Resort, 18 hole golf course located in KAWAIHAE, Hawaii.
Consistently ranked in the top 50 on Golf Digest’s "Top 100 Courses You Can Play,"the legendary Mauna Kea Golf Course overlooks one of the world’s most beautiful beaches on the west shore of Hawaii’s Big Island. The course opened in 1964, a Robert Trent Jones Sr design.
The course gained world-wide fame as the site of a memorable televised match among golf’s “Big 3:” Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.
In 2008, Mr. Jones’ son, Rees Jones, brought his father’s original layout into the 21st century with a careful and creative renovation.
The enduring ocean-front layout was preserved while the challenge and playability were enhanced, insuring that Mauna Kea would rank among the world’s greatest golf courses for decades to come. With a top slope rating of 144, Mauna Kea from the championship tees is one of the finest tests of golf in the world. But five sets of tees assure that all golfers can find an appropriate challenge.

Just re-opened in December 2009 after a remodel by Rees Jones. It is quite a difficult layout with elevated, rolling greens and numerous sand traps. It plays 7500 yards from black tees, but the blue or orange tees supply enough of a challenge for the average golfer. The par threes are fabulous and all eighteen approach shots are a test of one's golfing skill.
